History:
The year was
1974, and as the story goes, a few woodcarvers would meet at the
downtown YMCA in Louisville, KY.
In 1976, these
carvers moved to Senior House, now know as ElderServe of
Louisville. The group took on the name Falls Cities Wood Carvers
Guild. Today the guild has about 60 men and women members.
Membership is open to anyone with an interest in woodcarving.
The guild
meets every Tuesday morning, rain or shine, unless the public
schools are closed due to the weather (snow, ice, etc).
Each summer
the carvers and guests have a potluck lunch at a local park. In
December the carvers and guests have a Christmas lunch at a local
buffet restaurant.
Since 1993 the
guild has adopted a needy child from Angel Tree. Recently a
family from CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocacy) has been
adopted. Funding for this has been primarily through the
creating and selling of wood carved Christmas ornaments by the
members.
Purpose:
The purpose of
the guild is to foster and keep active all present and traditional
wood carving skills.
